Yemen, Africa

A powerful new autobiography.

It’s hard to imagine that there have been many younger divorcées or braver ones than a pint-size third grader named Nujood Ali."

Pakistan, Asia

An American Nurse is sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Nigeria, Africa

Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut, begins like many novels set in regions considered exotic by the western reader: the politics, climate, social customs, and, above all, food of Nigeria (balls of fufu rolled between the fingers, okpa bought from roadside vendors) unfold like the purple hibiscus of the title, rare and fascinating. But within a few pages, these details, however vividly rendered, melt into the background of a larger, more compelling story of a joyless family.

Lagos, Africa

Chinua Achebe has become the father of Urban African Literature. This story is about a young man from Lagos torn between two culture and religion.
